Gerwyn Price has apologised to fellow darts player Peter Wright after his semi-final defeat to the Scot in the PDC World Championship.

Price, from Markham, struggled for consistency in Monday’s 6-3 defeat to Wright, as he averaged 89.94 in a feisty affair.

However, the Welshman took to Twitter on Tuesday to apologise to Wright for any ill-feeling in the contest and to look back on a successful 12 months which saw him retain the Grand Slam of Darts title.

Price wrote: “I overreacted to what Peter did after set one. It might’ve been banter, but I was so in the zone and just missed a load of set darts and I wasn’t ready for what he did.

“I will learn and everyone makes mistakes. I’m still new to this and still learning. I apologise to everyone who thinks I’ve done wrong and maybe I was a bit OTT.”

The opening set went to a deciding leg, which Wright won in 11 darts. Wright then tapped Price on the arm and spoke to him.

When Price levelled at 1-1, he went into Wright’s path during his celebration. Neither men shook hands after the match.

Speaking after the match Wright said: “He wanted me to concentrate and I did just that – and he lost.”

Former rugby player Price, 34, whose nickname is ‘The Iceman’, initially took to Twitter in the early hours to hit back at online criticism.

He said: “It’s not a rule that you have to shake hands before, after or during a game.”

However, after Price’s apology, it seems the two players have already patched things up.

In a screenshot of messages posted to Price’s Twitter account, Wright said: “Sorry for being a clown in the first set. I understand now and shouldn’t of done nothing to you sorry (sic).”

Both agreed and made up, hopefully this can be parked and left behind… love the bloke to bits, during my tough time this year Peter and Jo stuck by me and kept me positive, glad we have made up xxx @snakebitewright pic.twitter.com/f0WJAId3je
