Concerned parents, worried about reports of a suspicious man on school property, have been reassured there was nothing untoward going on.

A warning message about an individual seen at The Twyn School in Caerphilly was mistakenly sent out to parents by staff at Llanfabon Infants School, in Nelson.

The message subsequently went viral on social media causing panic – but both Caerphilly County Borough Council and Gwent Police have since said parents need not worry.

A man visited The Twyn on Wednesday, January 8, and asked staff about volunteering at the school.

Parents then raised concerns after the same man reportedly questioned them on the school’s security arrangements.

Following this, Caerphilly County Borough Council sent a reminder to headteachers of other schools about remaining vigilant.

However, the message ended up being circulated to parents at Llanfabon Infants School.

It has since been established the man was genuine in his offer of volunteering.

In a statement, The Twyn School said: “We are aware that a message was circulated yesterday about a male on the school premises.

“We would like to reassure everyone that neither ourselves nor the police have any concerns.

“We would also like to remind parents that the school is a secure site and everyone has to sign in. However, if any parents have any concerns, please report to the school office or dial the police on 101.”

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We are not treating this incident as suspicious.”

This article has been amended to remove a claim from Gwent Police that the man was known to the school.
