The cash machine at the Premier Mount View Store in New Tredegar has been made free to use following a campaign for more free-to-use cash machines in the Upper Rhymney Valley.

Link, which operates the UK’s cash machine network, has removed the £1.60 fee.

Before the ATM charge was removed, the nearest free-to-use machine was two and a half miles away in Aberbargoed.

Gerald Jones MP and Dawn Bowden AM, who are leading the campaign, are continuing their push for more free access to cash in the area, with the ATM in Fochriw Village Store made free-to-use in August 2019.

Mr Jones MP said: “Many people in our area still rely on cash to pay for everyday expenses, and should not have to pay when they want to withdraw some, or travel miles to find a machine that is free to use.

“Dawn and I are looking forward to continuing to work with LINK to look at improving local access to cash further in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney.”

Nick Quin, Link’s Head of Financial Inclusion, said: “We want to hear from more communities in Wales that have cash access issues.

“While the network provides convenient access for most people, we know that communities are best placed to identify any issues. Any enquiries can be made via our new request website.”
