It was a great honour to be re-elected as the MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney in the General Election, and now that Parliament’s back in session I’ll continue to do all I can to stand up for our area in Westminster.

Hard work continues back in Westminster after General Election in December

It was a great honour and privilege to have been re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney in the General Election in December, and I’m very grateful to all who put their faith in me.

Now that Parliament is back in session, I will continue to work hard to stand up for our area in Westminster.

Campaign to improve access to cash in the Upper Rhymney Valley continues

Dawn Bowden AM and I are continuing our joint-campaign to secure more free-to-use cash machines in our area, and we are delighted that following meetings with LINK, the operator of the UK’s cash machines network, the ATM in Premier Stores, New Tredegar has now been made free to use – after previously charging £1.60 for transactions.

In August last year, after campaigning and meeting with LINK the ATM in Fochriw was made free-to-use, and Dawn and I are continuing to work with LINK in 2020 to look to secure more free ATMs for some of the more isolated communities in our area, which currently have very limited access to cash or sometimes none whatsoever.

Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day 2020

Gerald Jones MP signing the Holocaust Educational Trust Book of Commitment in Parliament before Holocaust Memorial Day

On January 27 we marked Holocaust Memorial Day, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day I signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, to honour those murdered and pay tribute to the extraordinary people who survived, and on the day I attended an incredibly moving memorial service in Westminster.

We must never forget the lessons of the past, and with increasing division in communities across the world, it has never been more important for us to stand together with others in our communities and stop the spread of hate and division in our society.

Congratulations to our local schools at the South Wales Argus School Awards

I want to say a huge congratulations to the pupils and staff at Fochriw Primary School, who won both Primary School of the Year and Overall School of the Year at the South Wales Argus School Awards earlier this month – an excellent achievement by all. Congratulations to Idris Davies School in Abertysswg for being nominated for awards too – da iawn pawb!
