An 18-year-old snooker player from Caerphilly believes he is continuing to improve as a player after reaching the semi-finals of the WSF Open World Championships in Malta last month.

Dylan Emery played eight games in the competition before being knocked-out by 25-year-old ex-pro Ashley Hugill, from England.

During the competition, Emery competed against players from countries across the globe, including Belgium, Latvia, Australia and China.

As a result of his performance, Emery won a cash prize of €1,250.

He has also recently competed at the Birmingham Challenge tour event, where he was knocked out in the last 16.

Speaking about his performance in the competitions, Emery said: “I wanted to win them both. It’s disappointing to have let the chance slip.”

He added: “Looking back, I do think I’ve improved over the last year or so. Competing at big events helps with the pressure.”

Emery is currently the number one in Wales at Under 21 level.

He practices at Trecenydd Snooker Club in Caerphilly and has travelled the globe competing as he aims to achieve his dream of turning professional.

He won the Romanian Open in 2017 and reached the semi-finals of the 2015 World Championships in St Petersburg, Russia.

His mother, Michelle Emery, has supported him every step of the way, travelling with him during his exploits both overseas and closer to home.

During an average week, Emery spends around 35 to 40 hours practising to sharpen up his game.

Emery says he’s aiming for a win at the European Championships in Portugal next month, which would see him secure a place on the 2020 pro circuit.

He is also preparing for the upcoming World Championship qualifiers in Sheffield.

Emery said: “I want to thank everyone at Trecenydd Snooker Club for all the support I have received.”
