Residents warned against trespassing on railway line

News | Rhys Williams | Published: 10:01, Tuesday March 31st, 2020.

Residents have been warned against trespassing on the railway line near Machen.

The warning has been issued by British Transport Police after reports of people walking along the track, which is still used by freight trains, and using it as a shortcut.

Warning signs have been put in place near the track and police have increased patrols in the area.

Inspector Mike Edwards, of British Transport Police, said: “These reports are deeply concerning. Although it may seem as if the line is out of use for passenger services, it is in fact currently in use for freight services, which can travel at any time of the day.

“Trespassing on any railway line is extremely dangerous and not only could people face prosecution, but they are risking their lives.”

Inspector Edwards added: “We are working closely with Network Rail and Gwent Police to increase surveillance in the area, as well as working with the local community to educate people of the dangers of trespassing.

“If you have any concerns or see something suspicious, please text us on 61016.”
