Work to begin on new pedestrian crossing

The footbridge between Newbridge and Pantside

Work to add a pedestrian crossing to a road in Newbridge will start next week, Caerphilly County Borough Council has confirmed.

Work will begin on the crossing, which will be underneath the footbridge linking Newbridge and Pantside, on Tuesday, May 26.

It is expected to take between six and eight weeks to install.

The new signal-controlled crossing will replace the temporary crossing that was put in place after the footbridge was damaged by a lorry mounted crane.

The new crossing will comply with accessibility guidelines for vulnerable users.

Fears that railway bridge may not re-open

A council statement said: “Due to the complexity of the claim, discussions are still ongoing between the council and insurance companies to replace the footbridge.

“Until a resolution is reached on the bridge replacement, the decision has been taken to construct a pedestrian crossing, offering a safer option to the temporary facility that’s currently in place.

“This is compliant with required design standards and legislative requirements.”

The council also said it “understands the impact that these construction works will have on both traffic flows and pedestrians”, and apologised for any inconvenience.

The authority confirmed that social distancing measures would be adhered to while installing the crossing.

Newbridge councillor Leeroy Jeremiah said: “Newbridge ward councillors prioritise children’s safety first and foremost.

“We have been actively trying to find a way forward by putting the views of residents to the local authority. We have been updating our social media page with updates and continue to work to find a solution.

“There’s no quick fix here, so this fully compliant, fit-for-purpose crossing is the best option.”

Cllr Adrian Hussey said: “Until a resolution is reached on the bridge replacement, this crossing offers a safer option to the temporary crossing.

“The prolonged dispute has understandably led to frustrations locally. Nobody in the Newbridge ward is responsible for this situation. We’re urging the insurance company to settle this case.”

Cllr Gary Johnston said: “These improvements are made with the best interests of safety in mind.”
