A rugby league club is on the lookout for new players to join their ranks for the upcoming season.

Aber Valley Wolves is looking for more players to join its U12s, U14s and U16s age groups, as well as players aged 16 and over for its new women’s side and open age men’s side.

With sport currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, the club, which plays its games on a rugby league-marked pitch at Aneurin Park in Penyrheol, is turning its attentions to the future.

The club is hoping to hold taster sessions once lockdown restrictions have been eased and has said anyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience.

The club has enjoyed recent successes, winning the U16s winning the Grand Final twice in a row while the U12s reached the Grand Final last year.

General manager Helen Treherne said: “It’s an exciting time for rugby league in Wales, as we build towards the men’s and women’s World Cup in England in 2021.

“The club is very lucky to have qualified, dedicated coaches, who give 100% to training sessions and matches, in addition to a growing number of qualified referees and first-aiders.”

Ms Treherne added: “The future is bright for Aber Valley Wolves. The pathway for rugby league in Wales is now much clearer and each and every club is working with Wales Rugby League to grow the game in Wales.

“Whether our players want to strive for regional/international honours, or just want to play for fun, the club and its coaches are very proud of each and every one of them.

“We’re also delighted that one of our players, Kyle Huish, was selected to attend Wigan Academy last year, which just goes to show what can be achieved in Wales now.”

Ms Treherne thanked the club’s sponsors, which include Castle Gate Restaurant, Aber DIY, Rich West Engineering Ltd, GKM Group Ltd, Miles Facilities Solutions and Yanto’s Alternative Meats, for their support.
