Vulnerable young people across Caerphilly County Borough will be given ‘care boxes’ as part of a new initiative from the council’s youth service.

The care boxes will contain an information booklet with useful contacts, alongside toiletries, cosmetics, snacks and mindfulness activities.

Each box will be tailored to the individual, with some boxes containing condoms and sanitary products provided through Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Period Dignity initiative.

The ‘Because We Care’ scheme was launched to coincide with Youth Work Week, which started on Monday (June 22).

The scheme has been developed by The Basement and HPAD (Homelessness, Prevention, Awareness, Diversion) teams, which are part of the council’s youth service.

The boxes will be delivered to the young people by their youth workers.

The council’s cabinet member for education, Cllr Barbara Jones, said: “We understand that this will be a particularly difficult time for many of our young people.

“The ‘Because We Care’ boxes offer a gesture of kindness, but also an opportunity to let young people know that the council’s youth service and other agencies are still on hand to help them.

“The launch of the initiative is also a great way to mark this year’s Youth Work Week, which celebrates the excellent work being delivered both locally and nationally to support young people.”
