Poppies have blossomed at Ysgol Bro Sannan, in Aberbargoed, as the nation marks Armed Forces Week.

These stunning pictures were sent to us by the school’s caretaker Stephen Davies – who in 2018 cycled 250 miles to the Somme battlefields of northern France to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Mr Davies, who joined the Army in 1986 and served with The Royal Regiment of Wales and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment, explained the story behind the school’s poppies.

In an email he wrote: “On Remembrance Day 2014, some of the children of Year 6, myself, Jamie Hallett then deputy now headteacher and Councillor Alan Higgs went to the memorial gates/garden in Aberbargoed to pay our respects to those [who lost their lives] 100 years earlier in World War One.

“Cllr Higgs gave the children packets of poppy seeds. A young lad opened his packet of seeds at school and the wind blew the seeds and the poppies have blossomed every year since.

“At the memorial gates several packets of poppy seeds were scattered but not one has blossomed.”

He added: “I do hope these pics can put a smile on some faces during this particular period in our lives.”
