Darts star Gerwyn Price has been beaten by world number two Peter Wright in the final of the PDC Summer Series Day Five.

Price, 35, missed out on a £10,000 prize after an 8-2 defeat to the Scotsman in Milton Keynes on Sunday evening (July 12).

Five knockout competitions were held behind closed doors over the space of five days, starting on Wednesday (July 8) and ending on Sunday.

Before the competition, all 128 players attending the event tested negative for Covid-19.

They were tested upon arriving at the event and were held in quarantine until the results came back.

Price knocked out of series after third place finish

After a quiet opening opening four days, Price hit sensational form to reach the final on the fifth day, averaging over 100 in each of his ties on the way there.

En route to the final, Price, from Markham, earned a 6-0 win over William O’Connor, before beating Darius Labanauskas 6-1.

Price then beat Jose de Sousa 6-5 in the last 16, before a 6-1 quarter-final win over Day Four champion James Wade, which sent the Iceman into the semi-finals.

In a tightly contested semi-final, world number three Price took on Devon Petersen, who had earlier dumped world number one Michael van Gerwen out of the competition.

Price edged out Petesen 7-6 to book a date with Wright in the final.

Peter Wright claimed an 8-2 final victory over Gerwyn Price

The decorated duo shared the opening two legs, before Wright took four in a row to gain a 5-1 lead.

Price hit back but it wasn’t enough to stop the reigning world champion from claiming his third title of 2020.

Across the five days, Wright collected £22k in prize money, having lost the final on the first day of the competition to van Gerwen.
