Gerwyn Price has risen to fourth in the Premier League Darts table after wins over world number one Michael van Gerwen and world number two Peter Wright.

Price, 35, beat Dutchman van Gerwen 8-4 in the 11th round of the competition on Saturday (August 29), before beating Scotsman Wright 8-6 the following evening.

The wins followed a defeat to top-of-the-table Glen Durrant in a feisty affair.

Immediately after the defeat, Price, from Markham, took to social media to attack his 49-year-old opponent, comparing him to an elephant and referring to him as “old man”.

However, Price apologised the following day and said: “The better man won.

“I need to stay off socials for an hour after games. Playing day after day against the best nine players in the world is high intensity and sometimes it gets too much.”

Durrant said the pair had “spoken and moved on” and described the matter as “closed”.

The tournament is being held in Milton Keynes without spectators present due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Since the competition restarted after lockdown, Price has won four games and lost twice.

He will take on Nathan Aspinall in round 13 on Wednesday (September 2).

It will be the second time in little over a week that the pair have clashed, with Aspinall winning the previous encounter 7-4.

The Iceman will then take on Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney in round 14, England’s Michael Smith in round 15 and Scotsman Gary Anderson in round 16.
