Scarecrows have been springing up around Draethen, Waterloo and Rudry as part of an initiative to slow the speed of traffic in the villages.

Residents have been creating scarecrows for a competition, with prizes up for grabs for the winners.

Councillor Jayne Garland, chair of Draethen, Waterloo and Rudry Community Council, said: “It might look like a bit of fun but there’s a serious side to our competition.

“Many of us in our villages know only too well the dangers of speeding cars in our country lanes. Research has shown that having tidy and interesting villages slows vehicles speed.

“This is why we are creating characters in a bid to reduce the circumstances of accident and injury through traffic speed.”

The winner of the competition will be chosen by Gwent Police.

Inspector Gavin Clifton, of Gwent Police, said: “There is a really active community here who we work closely with in an effort to stop people speeding through the villages.

“Their latest idea to involve people in spreading the message of road safety is also supported by our partners in the council highways department.

“Our neighbourhood policing team carry out speed checks and regular patrols in the area and we will continue to take action against anyone breaking the law.”
