Every primary school pupil in Caerphilly town will be given a Christmas selection box this month.

The boxes will be provided by Caerphilly Town Council and given out to schools within the Caerphilly Town Council area.

The town council has said the scheme will cost around £2,200.

What is Caerphilly Town Council?

Caerphilly Town Council covers the Morgan Jones ward and the St Martin’s ward.

It is separate to Caerphilly County Borough Council, which covers the entire borough.

Caerphilly Town Council, like other town and community councils in the borough, is made up of elected town councillors, who are given a budget each year to spend on projects within their area, including Christmas lights.

Councillor Steve Kent, who is also chair of governors at the Twyn School, proposed the idea and said: “We were very disappointed that, because of Covid, we had to cancel the Christmas Lights Switch On and the Lantern parade this year.

“However, we have been able to use some of  the money saved for this one-off gesture for  Christmas.”

Cllr Mike Prew, Mayor of Caerphilly town, said: “The children have been through a lot this year and their education has been disrupted.

“I hope this small token will just let them and their parents know that we are thinking of them at this time and wishing them a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”

Cllr Jamie Pritchard said: “Children have had a difficult time of things this year. The long break from school and reduced social interaction has been very difficult to deal with.

“A selection box might not make up for such a year, but I think this is something the Town Council should do every year.”
