A petition has been handed to Caerphilly County Borough Council, calling on the local authority to deal with parking problems on a residential street in Bargoed.

The petition was handed over by Caerphilly’s Member of Parliament, Wayne David, after residents living on Usk Road raised their concerns.

Residents have expressed their frustration about people who work nearby parking in their street – often leading to difficulties finding a parking space near their homes.

Mr David, who has worked on the issue alongside Bargoed ward councillor Dianne Price, said he approached the council about the situation early last year and was told a borough-wide examination of parking was set to take place.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has prevented that from taking place.

In a letter to council chief executive Christina Harrhy, Mr David suggested allowing teachers and staff at the nearby St Gwladys Primary School, as well as staff at the Citizens Advice Bureau, to be given free parking at St Gwladys’ Church.

Mr David said: “The car parking situation in Usk Road could be easily resolved but the council need to examine the situation quickly.

“I hope that they will allow teachers from the local school and the Citizens Advice Bureau to use the car park by St Gwladys’ Church free of charge. 

“The situation is extremely annoying for local people – they should be able to park outside or at least close to their homes. 

“As things stand, often they cannot do this. There is a solution and the council need to move on this.”

A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “Residents of Usk Road have previously requested residents-only parking be provided in their street. 

“They have been advised that the necessary surveys will be undertaken in accordance with council policy once Covid restrictions have been removed and patterns of parking and school attendance have returned to normal.

“Teachers and local workers are currently able to park for free, as all car parks within the county borough are free of charge until the end of March.”
