Cwmcarn Comprehensive in schools’ quiz

A comprehensive school has made it through to the next round of a national competition.

Cwmcarn Comprehensive School will represent Caerphilly County Borough in the All Wales School Liaison Core Programme Quiz.

The quiz tests pupils, aged 12 and 13, on their knowledge from PSE lessons.

Islwyn MP pays tribute to unsung Blackwood hero

Islwyn MP Don Touhig has paid tribute to Marjorie Holding for all the work she has done helping others over the years in Blackwood.

Mr Touhig presented his Unsung Hero Award to Mrs Holding for her contribution to Blackwood Methodist Church and the wider community.

She is a dedicated member of the Methodist Church and regularly holds coffee mornings to help raise funds for it.

Peter’s Pies wants volunteer tasters

Peter’s Food in Caerphilly is looking for volunteer tasters to try out its range of pies, pasties, sausage rolls and slices.

The company, based in Bedwas, wants to recruit the “pie-ologists” to help better the taste of its products – which have been a firm favourite of the Welsh for years.

James Osgood, marketing director for Peter’s, said: “There is no-one better placed to tell us how our products taste than our consumers.”

Historic gate house at Caerphilly Castle opened to the public

Parts of Caerphilly Castle previously closed to visitors have been opened up for all to explore.

The Inner East Gatehouse has never been seen before but has now been opened up thanks to recent restoration work.

The gatehouse was blown up and partly demolished during the Civil War 350 years ago and a partial reconstruction was carried out by the Marquess of Bute.

Caerphilly’s Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert as been re-selected to stand for the seat in May 2011 by the local Labour Party.

Bryn Hollywell, the Secretary of Caerphilly Constituency Labour Party, said: “Labour Party members and Trade Union Branches in the Caerphilly constituency have unanimously agreed to re-select our current AM, Jeff Cuthbert, as their candidate for the 2011 Assembly elections.”
