Based in one of the smallest villages in South Wales, The Lower Machen Festival is welcoming clarinettist Michael Collins as its artist in residence for 2014.
The event will host several concerts with the majority being held in St Michael and All Angels’ Church – dating back to the 12th Century. The festival also has a strong relationship with The Riverfront, Newport bringing four events to Newport during the week.
A spokesman for the festival explained: “As part of our vision, we continue to create innovative partnerships between young and established artists.
“This year we are delighted to welcome clarinettist Michael Collins as artist in residence. Michael will be appearing with both the Welsh Chamber Players and the Mavron Quartet.
“Voces 8 will be also in residence at the festival performing in concert and giving a workshop/informal performance providing a chance for interested singers to work with them.
“The City Waits launches the festival with a fascinating insight into the music and life of London between 1500 and 1700. Pianist Erdem M?s?rl?oglu returns to the festival following his solo recital in 2010 this time with his trio, Trio Isimsiz who have been making waves in the London concert scene. Another previous performer Leon McCawley returns to the festival by popular demand with a programme on an Italian theme. Always wanting to give a platform to Welsh musicians our evening concert at The Riverfront will feature renowned operatic tenor Dennis O’Neill together with students from the Wales International Academy of Voice.
“For those who enjoy listening to music late at night, we are pleased to continue our series of late night concerts with a piano duo recital given by Mariko Brown and Julian Jacobson.
“Our daytime events provide something for all ages with a children’s concert given by Little Notes and a chance to get involved with the Voces8 workshop.”
