Two drivers were arrested during a one-day police operation focussing on road safety.

The first was arrested under suspicion of drink driving, while the other was on suspicion of drug driving under the influence of cannabis.

Carried out on Monday, October 11, the day of action based at Newbridge’s Aiwa Technology Park was part of Gwent Police’s Operation Utah.

As well as Gwent Police, the DVSA, DVLA and Caerphilly County Borough Council were also involved.

Operation Utah aims to take dangerous vehicles and dangerous drivers off the road.

As well as the two drivers arrested, this is also what happened during the day – according to police.

  • 43 vehicles stopped for checks
  • 17 traffic offence reports (TORs) issued, including reports for insecure loads, defective tyres or brakes, driving without insurance, driving without wearing a seatbelt and MOT offences.
  • two vehicles seized for being driven without valid insurance
  • Go Safe recorded 58 motorists driving above the speed limit
  • DVSA issued 30 drivers with immediate roadworthiness prohibitions.

PC Lloyd Rees, of Gwent Police, said: “Those who choose to break the law on our roads by driving vehicles that aren’t roadworthy not only put themselves at risk but others too.”
