A family-run fruit and veg shop in the heart of Ystrad Mynach has been named the best in Wales.

Veg of Evans, on Penallta Road, was presented with the ‘Best Local Convenience Store’ award at the Welsh Business Awards 2026.

The shop, which opened its doors on September 26, 2014, in the town’s Jones Arcade before relocating in 2023, has earned itself a loyal customer base over the years.

It is also firmly rooted in its community, raising vital funds for charities including Velindre, Macmillan Cancer Support and many others.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Susanne Evans – who runs the shop alongside husband Simon – expressed her gratitude to customers and said: “If it wasn’t for everyone, we wouldn’t be here.”

This is the second time the business has been put up for the award, having been nominated back in 2022.

“We were very excited to find out we’d been nominated again,” Susanne said.

“When you get nominated, you tend to get an email or see it on social media.”

“They announce the recommended, then the runner up, and then the winner at the awards. But nobody actually knows where they’ve placed until the night.”

Veg of Evans saw off six other businesses from across the country to win the award.

At the ceremony, Susanne thanked her customers, delivery driver, and family and friends for their support.

“Everyone is a winner,” she said. “All the other small businesses who are in the finals also attend the awards, and everyone is so supportive of one another.

“There are businesses out there that are just as good as us, and it just came down to the votes in the end.”

Susanne described the awards as a “big help to small businesses,” and said she has seen an upturn in business since the win, with customers new and old coming in to congratulate her.

Veg of Evans also wholesales to local schools, restaurants, and care homes across Caerphilly County Borough and beyond, and Susanne says the demand for her produce has only grown since winning the award.

“The award definitely helps because the advertisement is getting out there. It makes a big difference. We get a lot of new customers and new wholesale leads coming in,” she added.

Veg of Evans is open weekdays from 9am to 4pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. You can contact Veg of Evans at Facebook.com/vegofevans or by calling the shop on 01443 858140.
