The banks of Caerphilly Castle have been decorated to mark the launch of the annual Poppy Appeal.

Volunteers from the Caerphilly branch of the Royal British Legion, Caerphilly Town Council and passers-by came together to create the artwork, which has been inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields.

It was created using hundreds of reused plastic poppies.

The Remembrance Service will take place at 3pm on Sunday, November 14 at the cenotaph in Caerphilly town centre, with the remembrance parade leaving St Martin’s Church at 2.45pm.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, organisers have asked attendees to wear masks where social distancing is not possible.

The Royal British Legion have been given permission to use the vacant downstairs of the Caerphilly Visitor Centre on the Twyn as a pop-up shop selling Poppy Appeal merchandise.

The pop-up shop will be open between November 1 and November 13 from 10am and 4.30pm.

Meanwhile, poppy markings are being painted on roads across Caerphilly County Borough.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said it is working with contractors to paint the designs onto road surfaces near all council-maintained war memorials.

Roman Road Markings, the company installing the artwork, has agreed to subsidise the designs in town centres.

The county borough council’s deputy leader, Cllr Jamie Pritchard, said: “The Council has recently agreed to support organisers of remembrance parades with their event logistics this year, therefore I’m pleased that we are further commemorating Remembrance Sunday with the installation of these beautiful poppy markings.”

For more information on ordering a wreath, or to be added to the list of organisations called out during the service who wish to lay a wreath, Poppy Appeal organiser Elaine Thomas can be contacted on 07975 542719.
