Several gravestones and stone slabs were stolen from a churchyard in Bedwellty over the weekend.

The thefts happened at St Sannan’s Church sometime on Saturday, May 7.

Writing on Facebook, Reverend Matt Davies said: “Someone has disgustingly stolen slabs from the path and gate to St Sannan’s. Some of the slabs were gravestones.

“If you stole them or know who did, do the right thing and bring them back. It’s repentance time.”

Rev Davies urged people to be careful when walking around the church and added: “It’s fair to say St Sannan’s is dear to many people’s hearts. It’s such a shame to see it vandalized in this way.”

One person who’s heart is close to the church is Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge – both his parents are buried there.

Cllr Etheridge said: “I am truly appalled and ashamed of who in society would steal the paving stones from a Church. Both my parents rest here and I am saddened by this.”

Cllr Etheridge urged people to contact him with information, which he said he will pass on to the police.

Gwent Police has confirmed it is investigating the thefts.

A police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a theft in Heol-y-Bedw-Hirion, Bedwellty after several paving stones were taken from the grounds of St Sannan’s church at some point on Saturday, May 7.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or send us a direct message on social media, quoting log reference 2200152927.

“You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with details.”
