A robber who threatened a shopkeeper with a machete before making away with four cans of Carling has been jailed.

Shaun Davies, 29, of Bedwellty Road, Aberbargoed, walked into the Family Choice Bargains store in Aberbargoed on March 5 and threatened shopkeeper Jeva Logeswaran.

Davies pulled out a machete and demanded money, but as Mr Logeswaran tried close the shop’s shutters, Davies got away from the store with the cans of lager.

Mr Logeswaran recognised Davies, despite him wearing a hood and a face mask, and called the police.

Davies was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on May 25, where he pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of robbery.

He was handed a four-year and eight-month prison sentence.

Police Constable Jessica Gilbert, of Gwent Police, said: “This was a terrifying incident, where innocent members of the public were threatened with a knife by Shaun Davies.

“Robbery can have a significant and long-lasting impact on those targeted and I commend the victims’ bravery throughout the police investigation, which resulted in Davies being arrested and charged within 48 hours of the offence.

“Davies’ prison sentence should serve as a reminder that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour and anyone acting in such a criminal manner will be dealt with robustly by both police and the courts.”
