Community councillors have called for action to be taken over a Fochriw road that floods in heavy rain.

Known locally as Trecatti Road, the stretch is a mountain road taking you from Fochriw towards Asda in Merthyr.

According to Cllr Robert Chapman, who is a community councillor for Fochriw and Pentwyn on Darran Valley Community Council, the road often gets waterlogged in places.

He said: “The amount of water running down is causing a flooding issue.

“It gets down to the bottom and the water then overflows onto the road.”

Cllr Chapman, who also sits on Caerphilly County Borough Council, is concerned that excess water on the road could cause an accident especially as there are no street lights on the road. 

“Anything could happen really,” he said. “They could get stuck in there because of [the] depth [of the water].”

The situation is more pressing as an increasing number of drivers are using Trecatti Road as an alternative route due to works and traffic build-up on theHeads of the Valleys Road near Dowlais Top.

“That road now has [become] a lot busier,” said Cllr Chapman “Because of the road traffic that we’ve got over in Merthyr.”

There has been a concerted effort from community councillors to look into the problem, with Cllr Eddy Blanche sending an email to Caerphilly County Borough Council and Cllr Chapman chasing up the issue.

“At the moment they are doing investigations on it to see what can be done really to resolve it,” said Cllr Chapman. “I’ve been assured that they are going up [and] checking it as well.”

Cllr Chapman added that it could be a number of issues including a possible blocked pipe but the end result depends on the speed the Highway Department can deal with it. 

“We’re trying to resolve it, for it not to happen in the first place.”
