More than £2,000 has been raised for the new Breast Care Centre in Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr through a series of community events.
Pontllanfraith Inner Wheel, Friends of Harmony and a number of establishments across Blackwood High Street raised an estimated £2,000 in total through concerts, raffles and a charity shopping event during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The funds were presented to Sian Redwood, Breast Unit Manager and Louise Davidson, Lead Breast Nurse at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), at Bon Marché in Blackwood, November 28.
What is the All-New Breast Unit at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr?
The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Breast Clinics are the busiest in Wales seeing over 6000 patients per year with 500 cancers being detected and diagnosed every year. To improve the service of patients with all breast conditions the ABUHB are building a “Centre of Excellence” at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital in Ystrad Mynach. Due for completion by 2023 it is intended the unit will provide state of the art facilities for patients and staff.
The vision of the new breast unit is to have a one stop clinic that will make the journey with breast cancer much easier, by having quicker diagnosis and treatment plans.

Sian Redwood spoke about the continued fundraising for the centre.
“Money is still coming in,” she said. “The community in this area has been great.”
The money being raised will be put towards interior enhancement, which will ensure the centre looks “less clinical” with a friendly environment for patients.
The Breast Care Units in the ABUHB are the busiest in Wales, seeing more than 6,000 patients a year.
The new centre will unify and centralise the service at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr.
The centre is currently being built and is set to be finished in December 2023 with plans to be operational by January 2024.
