Demolition work on the derelict former care home of Ty Darran in Risca has begun, to make way for a new “flagship” housing development for the over-55s.

Outline planning permission to build was submitted by Caerphilly Homes – a branch of Caerphilly County Borough Council – and was granted by the local authority’s planning committee in March last year.

The former care home closed more than a decade ago and planning permission to demolish it was obtained in April 2021.

Council leader Sean Morgan, said “It’s fantastic to be here to see the first stages in developing what will become a flagship scheme for later living.

“We know from conversations with future residents that they’re keen to see this development progressing, so I’m sure this initial step will come as positive news.”

The plans for the site include 46 apartments, a community garden, allotments and shared spaces which will be used for coffee mornings, yoga classes, watching sports, or art classes.

The development includes 19 car parking spaces with a minimum of two electric car charging points.

Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, added: “The development is in a prime location offering easy access to a wide range of services and recreation for residents, within the local community or in the comfort of their own communal spaces.”

Contractors Willmott Dixon have been awarded the contract to demolish the former care home and build the new complex.

This project will contribute to the council’s goal of building 400 new affordable zero carbon homes by 2025.
