Gerwyn Price’s lead at the top of the Premier League Darts table has been extended, despite missing out on success in Leeds on Thursday night.

Price, from Markham, fell to a 6-4 defeat to reigning world champion Michael Smith in the Night 13 final.

It was the second consecutive final defeat for Price, who was beaten in Rotterdam last week by Nathan Aspinall.

In the process, world number one Smith avoided a third consecutive defeat to Price to scoop the £10,000 winner’s prize.

The Englishman stormed into a 2-0 lead, but while Price managed to win the third leg to half the deficit, Smith hit back to regain his two-leg lead.

Price conjured up an effortless 148 combination on tops to reduce the arrears to 4-3, but Smith was resolute, rounding off 13 and 14-dart legs to secure a precious five points in the table.

On his way to the final, Price opened up with a 6-2 win over Jonny Clayton in an all-Welsh match-up, before getting revenge on Nathan Aspinall, beating him 6-3 in the semi-final.

In doing so, Price reached his seventh Premier League final of the year, registering wins in in Cardiff, Nottingham, Newcastle and Brighton.

Premier League Darts returns on Thursday May 4 in Manchester, with Price facing Michael van Gerwen in the opener in a top-of-the-table battle.
