Fochriw Primary School is one of just five schools in Wales to have been given special recognition for its approach to sustainable and active travel.

Sustrans Cymru, the charity which aims to make it easier for everyone to walk, wheel and cycle,  recognised five schools across the country that have supported and promoted active travel.

The schools were recognised in their communities on the tenth anniversary of the Active Travel Act on May 10. 

Fochriw Primary was recognised for its whole school community approach. 

The school has been part of numerous activities, including the Active Journeys programme, Bike to School Week, and a bike maintenance session. 

Cllr Carol Andrews, council cabinet member for education and communities, said: “To be one of only five schools across Wales to receive special recognition for their green credentials is a massive achievement.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the whole school community, especially parents for supporting their children to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Well done all.”
