Primary school pupils have visited a waste management company to learn more about sustainability.

Pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili visited Newport-based GD Environmental on June 16 and were treated to a tour of the waste transfer station.

There, pupils were able to see the sorting and preparation of various types of waste for recycling or disposal.

They also explored the wet waste yard, where organic materials are turned into valuable resources.

Jodie Carter, Year 2 teacher at Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili, said the trip was a “fantastic opportunity” for the children to “see what happens to our waste after we recycle it”.

She added: “The children can hopefully educate their generation on how we can save the planet by being more aware of what happens to the waste.”

The trip was part of GD Environmental’s sustainable schools initiative.

The company’s operations manager, Henry Hazell, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the eco-council from Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili.

“The children seemed really engaged and enthusiastic about their role in trying to prevent, reduce and reuse waste, which was brilliant to see. We’re hoping to roll this out to more schools across south Wales in alignment with the government’s zero-waste strategy.”
