A burglar who was armed with an axe when he threatened staff at Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel and Spa earlier this year has been jailed.

Shaun Davies, 34, of Pen y Werlod Road, Markham, appeared in Cardiff Crown Court on August 2, where he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail.

On January 30, Davies wielded an axe at staff at Bryn Meadows, near Maesycwmmer, before making away on a motorbike with an empty till draw, despite being disqualified from driving.

Shortly after, he was arrested by police at Sports Direct on Blackwood Gate Retail Park, having taken clothes and trainers from the store.

In November 2022, he burgled a petrol station in Blackwood and Hughes Forrest builder’s merchants, and attempted to break into the Morrisons store in Bargoed.

He pleaded guilty to four counts of burglary, as well as counts of attempted burglary, affray, and possession of an axe in a public place.

Davies also pleaded guilty to four counts of driving while disqualified, as well as four counts of driving without insurance.

He was also slapped with a four-and-a-half year driving ban.

Police Constable Ian Tucker, of Gwent Police, said: “Shaun Davies has a substantial offending history for dishonesty and driving offences. During his crime spree he was armed with an axe, this along with his actions, left members of the public in fear for their safety.

“We welcome this custodial sentence, which will hopefully not only provide some closure for the victims but also allow Davies the time to reflect on his behaviour.

“We remain committed to investigating reports of burglary and ensure those who commit such crimes are brought to justice.”
