Free school meals are expected to be available for pupils in Years 3 to 6 from September

All primary school pupils in Caerphilly County Borough could be able to receive free school meals from September onwards.

Caerphilly County Borough Council said it expects to complete the phased introduction of free school meals for primary school children ahead of the new academic year.

This is a year ahead of the Welsh Government guidelines, which calls on councils to provide free school meals to all primary school pupils from September 2024 at the latest.

Currently, pupils between nursery and Year 2 are already receiving free school meals, with the scheme being extended to cover pupils in Years 3 to 6.

Barring any “unforeseen circumstances that may arise,” the rollout will go ahead from September, the council has said.
