Van Ward Allotments is set to open a “totally green” wellbeing room later this month, in hopes of bringing people together and improving mental health.

The allotment, just off Van Road, Caerphilly, has around 100 members according to chair Tracey Davies, who thanked the “tireless effort” of the project’s many volunteers over the last two years.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Ms Davies said: “We had a backroom to a building on the allotments and thought it would be a great idea to turn it into something useful.

“It’s all been painted and decorated as well as insulated for the cold winter months. We’ve had loads of help from people in the community that I’d like to thank.

Van Ward Allotment is based in Caerphilly and has around 100 members

“It’s been a huge project that I believe is going to make a huge difference to people that feel disconnected and alone.”

As well as support plastering, painting, and decorating, the allotment has also received funding and equipment from the likes of Wickes, B&Q, Caerphilly County Borough Council, and Asda.

Ms Davies, who works for mental health charity Platfform, added: “We want to let people know that coming to an allotment doesn’t have to be about digging and weeding, we see it as a hub for everyone and this wellbeing room is going to make things even more inclusive.”

Ms Davies went on to say the room will be “totally green”, with solar panels providing electric.

Inside the room, which will be open on Friday October 27 at 3pm, there will be services such as phone charging points and a microwave available, and during the winter months it will act as a warm hub.
