Markham’s Gerwyn Price is into the World Grand Prix final in Leicester after seeing off reigning world champion Michael Smith.
Price beat Smith 4-2 in the semi-finals on Saturday October 7 to set up a finale meeting with Luke Humphries on Sunday evening.
It will be Price’s third World Grand Prix final in four years, having won the competition in 2020.
Speaking after his victory over Smith, Price said: “Michael Smith is the World Champion and world number one, so I knew it was going to be difficult.
“I felt I probably should have been 2-0 up, and then I found myself 2-1 down. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I fought back and put him under pressure from then on.
“It was a difficult game but one that I’m glad I came through. Luke is a great player, he’s had a bit of lady-luck on his side in this tournament, but it will be tough tomorrow.”
Speaking ahead of the final, Humphries said: “I’ve got a good record against Gezzy this year which does give me confidence, but this is a different ball game. I’m going to enjoy it, because these opportunities don’t come around every day.”
En route to the final, Price got the competition underway with a first round 2-0 win over Danny Noppert, before a 3-0 second round win over Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski.
Price then beat Germany’s Martin Schindler 3-0 in the quarter-finals before coming through his semi-final clash with Smith.
