A catering assistant has marked more than 30 years of service at a primary school in the borough – and was thanked at a special assembly for her loyal service. 

Julia Jenkins, 74, worked in the kitchen at Fochriw Primary School for 32 years and 7 months.

A special assembly was held for Julia on her last day, Friday October 27.

Headteacher Mrs Sharon Pascoe and students presented the long-term member of staff with flowers, a balloon and chocolates. 

Two students also gave a short presentation with photos of Julia and words of thanks which included: “We will all miss you. Thank you for your hard work from Fochriw Primary School.”

Nursery children also performed nursery rhymes in Welsh and English including The Grand Old Duke of York. 

Mrs Pascoe called the performance “wonderful” and added: “What a treat for your last day, Julia.”

Caerphilly Observer spoke to Julia about her time at the school. 

“They’re lovely old kids,” said Julia, “There’s so many happy memories.”

She continued: “I won’t forget, I’ll treasure them.” 

Julia also received a special card made by the students which had a cook’s apron on the front and pages of hand-drawn pictures of students, along with their names inside. 

Julia started at the school by putting her name down to cover shifts and then stayed in the kitchen where she has worked ever since. 

She also helped to run the breakfast club for pupils.

Julia lives in Fochriw and while she has seen the staff and the students change over time, the friendly atmosphere has stayed the same. 

“I’ll miss the staff and I’ll miss the children,” she said.

Corrine De’Ath, who works for the catering department at Caerphilly County Borough Council, also attended the assembly. 

Corrine said: “I’ve come to represent the council just to say what a wonderful member of staff she’s been and a loss to us.

“I’ve worked with Julia…as a cook as well as a supervisor, she’s lovely.”

On Julia’s 32 years of service, Corrine added: “There’s not many of Julia about.”

For Corrine, Julia will “always be a member” of the catering department. 

This is something that might become a reality as Julia has already asked if she can come up and visit the school.

Asked what’s on the cards now she’s retired, Julia replied: “My feet up.”
