Jeff Cuthbert is stepping down as Gwent’s police and crime commissioner at the next election.

Mr Cuthbert has been in the post for seven years, having won the elections in 2016 and 2021.

The Labour politician previously represented the Caerphilly constituency in the then-called National Assembly for Wales between 2003 and 2016.

Police and crime commissioners are appointed to oversee police forces and hold chief constables to account. The next PCC elections will likely be held in May 2024.

Jane Mudd, who has been the leader of Newport City Council since 2019, has been confirmed as Welsh Labour’s candidate to succeed him.

The inaugural holder of the post was the late Ian Johnston, who served between 2012 and 2016.
