Bedwas recorded their fourth win on the bounce when they beat Cardiff Met 21-15 at the Bridgefield on Saturday December 16.

The winning run comes after a run of four consecutive losses, which left the club languishing second bottom of the WRU National Championship East table.

Fast forward a month and Bedwas now sit sixth after wins over Treorchy, league leaders Ystrad Rhondda, Beddau, and now Cardiff Met.

On a cool, overcast afternoon, both Bedwas and Cardiff Met sought an early advantage but neither side could force a breakthrough in the early part of the game.

Bedwas had the wind behind their backs in the first-half, but James Dixon missed the first kickable penalty of the half.

The hosts made good ground from the restart, with winger Aaron Billingham using his pace to cross over and score the opening try in the corner in his 50th appearance for the club.

Dixon converted from the touchline to give Bedwas a 7-0 lead.

The visitors had an opportunity to reduce the deficit five minutes later but Ross McKay’s penalty fell short.

Both side’s defences continued to dominate before Bedwas’ Jak Robbins was injured in a tackle, ruling him out of action for a few weeks. Jacob Wright took over scrum-half duties.

Just before the interval Lewis Bowden bulldozed through the visitor’s defence to extend Bedwas’ lead.

In the build up to the try, two opposing defenders clashed heads attempting to stop him, and were forced to go off.

Dixon missed the conversion and half-time arrived, with Bedwas leading 12-0.

Cardiff Met opened the scoring in the second-half through a McKay penalty, but the gap was restored through a Dixon penalty five minutes later – taking his points tally to 150 for the season.

A Connor Chapman try later on cut Bedwas’ lead to seven points, but a Dixon penalty soon followed to put Bedwas 18-8 ahead.

Soon after, Met’s Roma Zheng scored his side’s second try of the afternoon following a jinking run. McKay’s conversion put Met within three points of Bedwas with 12 minutes remaining.

However, Met’s comeback hopes were dashed by Bedwas, who extended their lead to six points shortly after through a Dixon penalty.

Cardiff Met refused to lie down but Bedwas’ defending was astute and no further points were scored.

Bedwas return to action on Saturday December 30, where they travel to Cardiff to face St Peters at 2.30pm.
