Trethomas Bluebirds are one of the favourites to gain promotion to the Cymru South this season
Trethomas Bluebirds lifted the FAW Amateur Trophy last season

Last season’s FAW Amateur Trophy winners, Trethomas Bluebirds, have drawn league rivals Lliswerry AFC in round six of the cup competition.

The defending champs are thankful to be hosting the Newport-based side this round, having travelled 190-miles to Anglesey in the last round to face Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, who they beat 7-0.

Bluebirds manager Mark Dunford spoke to Caerphilly Observer after the draw and said: “We’re really pleased to be drawn at home after our fair share of travels north.

“We would have been happy to play anyone at home, Lliswerry are a very good side with some quality players. It bodes for a good tie.”

The Bluebirds famously won the second biggest cup competition in Wales with a 2-1 win over Denbigh Town last season.

Meanwhile, Lliswerry scraped through the last round with a penalty shootout victory over Afan United after a 0-0 draw.

They’ll need to reverse their recent form against Trethomas if they’re to progress any further in the competition, having lost the last two games against the Ardal South East leaders by a combined 17 goals.

A win for the Bluebirds will leave them and just seven other sides across Wales bidding to hoist the trophy, and despite a sharp focus on gaining promotion this season into the Cymru South, the defending champions will surely have more than half an eye on retaining the cup.

The game against Lliswerry is due take place on Saturday January 20 at the Centre for Sporting Excellence, Ystrad Mynach.
