“Rugby was his life”: Cross Keys pay tribute to club manager Mark Prangell

Tributes have been paid to Cross Keys’ Mark Prangell

Tributes have been paid to Cross Keys RFC club manager Mark Prangell, who passed away on December 29.

A former Cross Keys player, Prangell went on to coach the club’s youth side, before becoming team manager in 2007.

Announcing his passing following a short illness, the club said: “Mark leaves a legacy not just at our club, but many clubs within Gwent and beyond.

“He has touched the lives of so many people, players, coaches, supporters, players’ family and friends.

“To say he leaves a massive hole in Cross Keys RFC is an understatement. He has been a great influence on so many players and coaches.

“His greatest pleasure was to see players and coaches achieve their absolute full potential – rugby was his life.”

The club continued: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Angie and her family at this very, very sad time.”

Cross Keys head coach Morgan Stoddart, a former Wales international, said: “Been a tough few weeks but looking back with a smile at all the memories and good times we shared at Keys together. You are a great man Prang and you’ll be missed dearly. Up the keys.”

Former Keys centre Gareth Maule, who also played for the Dragons and the Scarlets during his career, said: “This is desperately sad news. Couldn’t do enough for me when I turned out for the Keys – and a gentleman that is invaluable to any organisation.

“Rest easy Prang. My thoughts are with Angie and the family.”

Tributes to Prangell also poured in from the wider Welsh rugby community.

Broadcaster Phil Steele described Prangell as “a very fine servant of rugby and Cross Keys in particular,” while Cardiff Met head coach Ian Gardner, formerly of Bedwas, said: “He was someone who was an ever-present figure over the years and synonymous with Keys.”

Ahead of the Dragons’ New Year’s Day win over the Scarlets at Rodney Parade, a minute’s silence was held in memory of both Prangell and former Wales captain Brian Price, himself a former Keys player.
