Caerphilly Town Bowls Club rounded off its 80-year anniversary celebrations by marking the successes of its members throughout 2023.

The club was set up in 1943, in the midst of WWII, and plays its home games at Morgan Jones Park.

It’s presentation dinner and dance was held on November 17 at Caerphilly Golf Club, where bowls club chairman John Jacobs and Caerphilly town mayor Mike Prew presented trophies to club members.

2023 saw club member Marc Wyatt, who won 2018 Commonwealth gold in Gold Coast, Australia, inducted into the Caerphilly County Borough Sports Wall of Fame – joining the likes of Wales football stars Aaron Ramsey and Natasha Harding, boxer Lauren Price, and taekwondo’s Lauren Williams.

Meanwhile, the year also saw members John Jacobs, Tony Protheroe, Cline Ginsberg, and Keith Casey Jones reach the county triple finals and play in the national finals at Llandrindod Wells.

There was also success in the Rhymney Valley finals, where Mike Ball finished runner-up in the singles, while Keith Jones, Cline Ginsberg and Tony Protheroe won the triples.

Club members also tasted success on the international stage for Wales during the World Deaf Tournament in Scotland. Terry Smith won three silver medals, while Barry Clarke earned two silvers and one bronze.

There was also success for Denise Molan and Colleen O’Connor, who won in county pairs playing for their other club, Gilfach Bargoed.
