Gus Jones Jewellers has announced it will close in March

A Bargoed jewellery shop which has been running for more than 120 years is set to close due to “rising costs” and “falling footfall”.

Gus Jones Jewellers, on Hanbury Road, will close its doors in March, having first opened in 1903.

The closure was described as a “very difficult” and “emotional decision” by the shop in a public post on its Facebook Page.

They also wrote: “Thank you to all our customers over the past 120 years and to all our employees who have worked in Bargoed, we have really valued being part of the community.”

Gus Jones also has other outlets in Blackwood, Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny. The Bargoed store was the first ever opened by the Jones family.

This comes after another shop in Bargoed, Just Because, announced its closure in December 2023.

The shop, which sells candles, home furnishings, gifts and cards, is currently having a closing down sale.

On its Facebook page, the shop said the rising cost of living and people shopping online rather than the high street made staying open “impossible”.

Caerphilly County Borough Council recently unveiled its plan to tackle empty shops in Bargoed.

A ‘Meanwhile Space’, which is similar to a pop-up, is set to come to the town.

The council hopes this will encourage other businesses and bring a bit of “vitality” to the High Street.
