More than £5k raised for new breast care unit by former mayor

More than £5,000 has been donated to the new breast care centre in Ystrad Mynach following a fundraising push from the former mayor.

Each year, the county borough mayor choses a charity to support during their term, with Cllr Elizabeth Aldworth choosing the #TurnABUHBPink campaign during her term in 2022/23.

The new breast care unit, at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, welcomed its first patients last month, with Cllr Aldworth presenting a cheque worth £5,041.83 to staff at the centre on February 23.

The centre will bring all of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB)’s breast care services under one roof. 

Sian Redwood, breast unit manager for ABUHB, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to have been selected as the mayor’s chosen charity for 2022/23 and are delighted to have received this generous contribution.

“We have been overwhelmed by the continued support of our communities and local residents throughout the fundraising process.

“The additional funds raised have allowed us to purchase feature lighting, calming artwork and comfortable seating for the unit and this is already having a positive impact on the experience of our patients.”

A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said Cllr Aldworth “would like to thank everyone who has generously donated towards this important charity”.
