A wheelchair rugby league taster session is being held at Caerphilly Leisure Centre this weekend.

Organised by Aber Valley Wolves, it will include activities led by qualified coaches, as well as three fixtures from the WRL Wheelchair Invitational League.

The sport can be played by both disabled and non-disabled players of all genders.

Helen Treherne, general manager of Aber Valley Wolves, said the event is the perfect opportunity for people to experience a new way to keep active.

“It’s always been an aim of ours at Aber Valley Wolves to provide the opportunity to play wheelchair rugby league, because we want to be even more inclusive that we already are,” she said.

“We were approached by Paul Sargent, an experienced player and coach, and have been loaned ten wheelchairs from the WRL, so we’ve decided to go for it.

“We’ve got families at the club who may have a disabled child who has not been able to play rugby league, but now they have the chance to take part.”

Ms Treherne added: “People can come along on Saturday (May 25), watch any of the matches and in between, get in the chairs and have a go. It doesn’t matter about age, gender, disability – just come and give it a go.”

The event gets underway at 9.30am with the first fixture between Cardiff Blue Dragons and Argonauts from Kent.

The second fixture will be between Argonauts and Crusaders Celts, while the third and final match, which kicks off at 12.25pm, will see Cardiff Blue Dragons face Crusaders Celts.

Taking part is free and there’s no need to register.
