One of Wales’ all-time great No8s, Taulupe Faletau, was at Ffos Caerffili yesterday to try out the whitebait at the market’s latest stall, Rite Up u’r Street.
The street food-style fish and chip shop launched on Thursday June 13, and is one of three chippies run by Lee and Samantha Humphries.
After a “whirlwind” couple of weeks, Sam told Caerphilly Observer: “It’s been a hectic few days and we spent a lot of time making sure everything was ready to go yesterday.
“It’s been a pleasure to see everything up and running, and we’re really excited to be offering something a bit different.”
The shop will still be selling its award-winning fish and chips as sold in Maesycwmmer’s Fish Kitchen 1854 and Bargoed’s Fish Kitchen 1931, but also some more street food-style dishes, such as lobster platters and ‘posh fish fingers’.
Sam continued: “The weather wasn’t the best yesterday but we’re really looking forward to the weekend with Pride on Saturday and Father’s Day on Sunday.
“The team at Ffos have been so supportive. Its been great meeting everyone here and we’ve had a really warm welcome.”
Partner Lee also spoke to Caerphilly Observer about his former rugby teammate Faletau visiting the shop: “He has been here a few times now supporting businesses. I played with him briefly at Cross Keys when he was a lot younger.
“He came with his kids and tried some whitebait. He’s a really nice guy and it was good to see him.”
