Bethan Dainton has been named Wales’ new captain

Hengoed’s Bethan Dainton will captain Wales’ rugby league side in a crunch Women’s World Cup qualifying match.

Wales, who are one win away from reaching their first ever women’s world cup, take on the Netherlands away from home on Saturday June 22.

Leeds Rhinos star Dainton scored two tries as Wales beat Ireland 28-10 in their first qualifying match in April – putting Wales on the brink of qualification.

The sides face each other in Purmerend, near the capital Amsterdam, with the game kicking-off at 3pm UK time.

Cardiff Demons trio Leanne Burnell, Lauren Aitken and Seren Gough-Walters all return to head coach Tom Brindle’s squad after missing the Ireland clash.

All three played in the first-ever match in 2019, as did Kathryn Salter who, if selected, will be the only player to have turned out in all 11 of Wales’ capped fixtures to date.

Gracie Hobbs, of Huddersfield Giants, and Cardiff’s Megan Whittaker are the only two uncapped players in the travelling party.
