An independent pub at the heart of its community has received a small grant to continue bringing people together and tackling social isolation.

Since taking over the White Cross Inn back in 2011, landlady Mair Arthur has worked tirelessly to establish the pub, in Groeswen near Caerphilly, as a vital part of the community.

The pub, which recently appeared in an episode of Doctor Who, holds regular events such as quiz nights, charity fundraisers, ale festivals, and music nights.

Hoping to tackle feelings of loneliness in the community, Ms Arthur applied for a grant from the not-for-profit organisation Pub is the Hub, which was able to help.

The money has allowed the pub to upgrade its sound capabilities with a new PA and music system.

Ms Arthur said: “This pub is a place for people to meet and form friendships. It is a very special place.

A new PA and music system has been fitted at the White Cross

“This new PA and music system will enable us to run more events supporting the local community and raising more money for charity. It is so important that people can come here to have that conversation and social interaction that is essential for tackling feelings of loneliness.”

According to a Welsh Government survey carried out between April 2022 and March 2023, 13% of people in Wales said they were lonely.

The White Cross holds regular events

As well as entertainment, the pub serves as a meeting place for various groups, including the Knit and Natter club, the Beerbellies Club, and the Wacky Wanderers walking group. The pub also hosts local sports teams, such as darts and cricket.

Roger Belle, regional advisor for Pub is The Hub, praised the White Cross’ efforts to make a positive impact and said: “Mair and the services and activities that the White Cross Inn provides have always had a real social impact on people in the local area.

“The new PA system helps to continue this mission and has already been put to good use.”
