Bonnie will represent Britain against the likes of America and China this April

After being diagnosed with autism aged three, Bonnie Gorham has used her ‘photographic memory’ to help dance her way into an international competition this April.

The now ten-year-old, from Maesycwmmer, has always struggled at school according to mum Hollie, but when on the dancefloor, she’s a “different person”.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about her daughter, Hollie said: “We noticed early on that she could remember details really well, usually copying things on TV.

“We decided to take her to dance and at first it was a nightmare with so much going on. She quickly got used to it though and has loved it ever since.

“She really loves the crazy and intense routines because it challenges her. As someone who finds it difficult socially sometimes, we’re so happy to see her enjoying herself.”

Bonnie is a member of two dance groups, one in Basingstoke as well as KLA Dance in Newbridge.

Her commitment has paid-off as Bonnie has been selected to represent Britain in Latin and ballroom dancing in Blackpool this April.

Bonnie qualified for Blackpool earlier this year

Hollie continued: “She competed at the British Nationals and was selected to go to Blackpool. She’ll be in a European competition between April 18 and 20, before competing against the likes of America and China between April 21 and 27 in the Junior Dance Festival.

“It’s a pretty full-on schedule, but she’s really looking forward to it.”

Asked if she sees this as a career for Bonnie, Holly said: “Absolutely, she loves it. When you see her dancing it’s wonderful.”
