A new all-weather sports pitch and specialist pupil support centre are being built at a comprehensive school.
Construction work began on Monday October 27 at Islwyn High School in Oakdale.
The scheme, approved by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet in 2024, will see around £950,000 invested into the projects.
The new multi-use games area (MUGA) is being built to replace the one on the site of the former Oakdale Comprehensive School, which is being redeveloped for housing. It will be open to the public outside of school hours.
Meanwhile, the new pupil support area will provide specialist support and tailored interventions for pupils, helping them develop the skills and confidence to manage their learning and wellbeing, according to the council.
The project is being managed by Caerphilly Homes, the council’s housing division, with the work being carried out by McAvoy.
Completion is expected in the new year.
Cllr Shayne Cook, Caerphilly Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The new MUGA and pupil support facilities at Islwyn High School are a fantastic example of how our investment in housing and community infrastructure go hand in hand.
“As work progresses on the Oakdale Place housing development, it’s important that we continue to deliver on our commitment to the wider community by providing modern, accessible amenities that benefit everyone.”
