Average speed limit on M4 at Newport lifted

The 50 mph average speed limit on the M4 between junction 24 and 28 in Newport has been lifted after work to install Variable Speed Limit (VSL) signs was completed.

Welsh Minister for Transport Carl Sargeant, said: “Users of this section of the motorway have become familiar with the average speed cameras as essential road works have been carried out on the motorway.”

“With those works now complete we’re in a position to replace the average speed cameras with the Variable Speed Limits.

“This route plays a major role in the connectivity for Wales and is essential to the future prosperity of our economy and the replacement of the average speed cameras with VSL will achieve this by using new technologies to help ensure that our road network runs smoothly.”

VSL works through sensors in the road detecting traffic build-up and automatically adjusts the speed limit to keep traffic flowing. Changes to the speed limit will be displayed to drivers via overhead electronic signs mounted on gantries. The mandatory 70mph national speed limit will apply during normal free-flowing traffic conditions.

The Welsh Assembly Government has said the changes on the stretch of motorway is expected to reduce accidents and lead to savings of £40million over a 30-year period.

Thank goodness this speed limit has now ended. This is now to be replaced with a variable speed, which I agree with, though it is a pity that it will be limited to a 1960's style maximimum.

Today, with far safer cars and motorcycles, a variable limit should have a realistic range. Perhaps down to 20 mph in times of snow, accident, etc up to 100mph with an empty motorway at 02-00 Hrs in perfect weather conditions.

I can't see this happening though and it is a good bet that the 50mph speed limit will be in force most of the time, to the continuing detriment of the Welsh economy.

I drove down this way on Saturday 27/08/11 and I was very pleased to see this. My new concern is the signs for speed cameras, are there any? If there are, where are they?? as people are still ignoring the speed limits like the idiot who zoomed past me, then pulled in front of me and slamming on the brakes and I almost went into the back off him!!!
