Plans to turn a former Cardiff pub in to flats with a ground-floor shop have been approved by the city’s council.

They could now see the former New Bridge Inn in Abergele Road, Trowbridge, knocked down in order to make way for 23 ”high-quality” flats in what is described as an accessible location.

The vacant pub is located on a corner plot off Abergele Road in a predominantly residential area with Borth Road immediately to the west and Caernarvon Way to the southeast.

It is also close to a Spar convenience store as well as a barber, pharmacy, and takeaway.

Part of the application handed in to the authority said: “The development will help boost the local economy by providing employment for the construction industry during these uncertain economic times.

“The commercial section of the building located on part of the ground floor represents positive business investment in the area and would create local employment opportunities.”

It added: “The proposal for the demolition of the public house and for the erection of a high-quality new residential development with a shop unit to part of the ground floor is of attractive appearance, design, and scale and would be served by appropriate upgraded access, parking, and amenity space provisions.”

The plans were approved by the council’s planning officers as part of delegated decisions made in December.

Once completed the new building would stand at four storeys in height and would contain 23 two bedroom flats.

The proposals also include cycle parking provision for up to 51 cycles across “various positions” on the site.

Additionally it would have 300sqm of grassed amenity space to the rear of the building.

The site was also previously home to a bookmakers and is understood to have closed for good in 2022 when the licence was not renewed by Cardiff council for its continued operation.

Following the council’s approval developers will now have three years to begin work.
