Forty-five Samsung smartphones are being offered to residents in need as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide in the community.
Caerphilly Miners’ Centre is helping to give out the refurbished devices to those who need them most, improving digital access and reducing electronic waste.
It follows the success of last year’s free Chromebook scheme, which saw the centre provide refurbished laptops to residents who lacked access to a suitable device or reliable internet connection. This enabled many people to access education, employment opportunities, and essential online services.
The smartphones are professionally refurbished, look like new, and come with a new charging cable and plug. In addition, recipients will receive a SIM card from the National Databank, providing free data, calls and texts for up to 12 months – helping to remove ongoing connectivity costs.
The scheme is being run through the Good Things Foundation’s National Device Bank initiative.
The initiative supports the centre’s wider mission to strengthen digital confidence, improve life chances and promote sustainability by giving technology a second life.
Elizabeth Scarlett, trustee at Caerphilly Miners’ Centre, said: “After seeing the positive impact of last year’s project, we’re proud to be able to offer another round of devices to local residents. These smartphones will help people stay connected, access essential services and build confidence online, while also reducing waste.”
To ensure recipients can make the most of their new devices, the centre also offers support with phone set-up and digital skills through its weekly Digital Fridays sessions. Running every Friday from 10am to 12pm, Digital Fridays are open to anyone needing support. The centre’s team of digital volunteers can help with tasks such as setting up smartphones, accessing online services, social media and much more.
Adults aged 18 and over, who live locally, are from low-income households, and do not have a smartphone or sufficient mobile data, can apply.
For more information, residents are encouraged to contact Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community on 02921 674242, or visit the centre on a Friday morning between 10am and 12pm.
