Storm Chandra is on its way

Storm Chandra is expected to bring a spell of severe weather to south Wales, including Caerphilly County Borough, from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday, according to the Met Office.

The storm is forecast to deliver prolonged periods of rain, with 20 to 30mm expected across much of the region and up to 50 to 80mm possible on higher ground, particularly in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).

Forecasters warn the rainfall will fall on already saturated ground, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding and difficult travel conditions. Strong southeasterly winds are also expected, with the most disruptive conditions likely overnight on Monday and into Tuesday.

A yellow weather warning is in place between 1pm today (Monday) and 10am Tuesday.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen said Storm Chandra would bring “a range of hazards” across the UK, with heavy rain and strong winds posing the greatest risk in parts of Wales.

The Met Office has urged people to stay informed of the latest forecasts and weather warnings, and to take extra care when travelling.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue later in the week, with further spells of rain and wind forecast, although some areas may see drier conditions on Wednesday.
